Dear Donors and Supporters
Namaste

At the beginning of the Nepali school year in April, four of our students: Puspa, Puja, Hira and Kumari all received a double promotion and advanced another year due to their diligence and continuing hard work!

Schooling was then disrupted on April 25th by the major earthquake that rocked Nepal, and all school classes throughout the country were suspended for 7 weeks. When classes resumed at East-Pole school in June, the staff (approx 80) elected our Manoj Subedi as the School Captain (Head Boy) of the whole school of approx 1400 pupils. A wonderful and well deserved honour and we are all very proud of him.

In July, Puja was awarded a special certificate for achieving 100% and topping her class in the exams.

On 21st June, Manoj Khatri, one of our extended family, now studying at University, travelled to South Korea as he had been chosen by the Nepal Paralympic Committee to take part in a training camp for swimming training. The Korean Youth Paralympic Committee funded participants from 11 countries for an 11 day all expenses paid training camp. This was a once in a lifetime experience for Manoj and for the closing ceremony he was chosen to give the speech of thanks to the hosts on behalf of all the participants.

Dhan Bhadur, another of our extended family, in class 12 studying Humanities, was involved in volunteering in a earthquake refugee camp for several months, and has been chosen by the Prime Minister's Adviser for the Disabled to give input to the Committee working on the new constitution for Nepal.

On Wednesday 12 August Kumari (15) was chosen to give a speech in English at the East-Pole School assembly, a daunting assignment for a shy girl. Her big teenage brothers, Saroj and Manoj said it was excellent!

Best regards to you all

Hira is 10 years old and was given a homework assignment to write 8 sentences about his family. When Hira came to DHC New Life Centre two years ago he could not speak or write either Nepali or English. He loves going to school.

This is what he wrote:

There are eleven members in my family. Among them Amrit Sir is head of our family. We have aunt who make food for us. There is a brother names Manoj who is elder among all of us. There is a boy named Shamul who is younger than all for us. There are six brothers and five sisters in my family. We really do enjoy with my family. My family members love me.

Dear Donors and Supporters
Namaste

All the DHC New Life are in good health and very busy at this time studying for their final examinations as the school year is nearly finished. We are very proud of our students at East-Pole school, all our older students studying at Colleges in Kathmandu and Manoj Khatri our first family member to be studying at University.

We are so very thankful to all our donors and supporters who have contributed so generously to the education costs in the past year. The opportunity for quality education is a very special gift and DHC New Life Family certainly do their very best and devote themselves very seriously to their studies and continue to achieve excellent results.

In the past year:

  • Sarvana Pandey received the National Disabled Federation of Nepal award for the highest examination marks for a disabled student in Nepal.

  • Manoj Khatri became our first student to be admitted to University.

  • Manoj Subedi gained 7th and Rebika Bhandari gained 10th in the Nepal National School Handwriting Competition.

  • Angel Dorjay won the dance competition at the East-Pole School Foundation Celebrations (there are 1200 students at the school!) .

The New School year commences in Mid April after the Nepali New Year celebrations and as always at this time of the year our focus is very much on raising the money for the school fees and expenses. A good education for these children is vital as it helps to break the cycle of poverty which is exacerbated for them because of their disabilities, and it opens positive options for them in terms of their adult life which is why it is one of our priorities. However education in Nepal is expensive as indicated by the following estimated figures for this coming school year. Education expenses for the East-Pole School students for the coming year are $5353.00 US Dollars .Education expenses for the College students studying the last 2 years of high school are $8737.00 US Dollars.

So we are trying to raise a total of $14,090 US dollars!!

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated and all donations regardless of size or type will be gratefully received. Donations can be made directly into our donations bank account.

Dear Supporters and Donors of DHC New Life Centre,

I hope you are all well. Things are going well here at DHC New Life and all the children are in good health.

Our SLC Students

They all are busy preparing for exams that start this week then they have around a month vacation and all the students can then have a holiday and a rest. This year 5 students have SLC (school Leaving Certificate) which is a national level exam, where around 500,000 student will participate, among them around 4% student will get above 80%. We hope all our students will get above 80% because they all are intelligent and very hardworking.

After the SLC they have 3 months vacation. At that time they go to visit their family so they are excited. Bharat has not visited his family for 7 years, so he is most excited. All other children also have 1 month holidays and may also be going to visit family.

After the holidays the SLC students leave the Care House, but we need to continue to provide financial support for them so they become part of our extended Family.

Those 5 students have really big hopes and dreams: Sarvana Pandey and Ajaya Lama want to become Doctors, Soma Doma wants to be a Nurse, Bharat wants to study Social Science, and Shanta wants to study Business Management.

We are so excited all our students have these goals and with your continued help and support will do our very best to help them fulfil their ambitions, and they will all continue to work as hard as they possibly can to utilize the opportunities that we all provide.

School Expenses

The new school year starts in April and we will be needing to pay the year's school fees and provide school uniforms, text books, etc at this time. If we are able to prepay the school fees tuition fees we get some discount, which is really helpful.

For school uniforms, we buy 2 sets of uniforms, 2 sets of footwear and one bag for each student.

For coming years our total education expenses estimate is 792700 Nepali Rupees (U.S.$ 9326 and Euro 7,206).

Thank you again for you love and support of the DHC New Life Family, without your ongoing help we would not be able to assist these wonderful young people.

Best Regards
Amrit Pudasainee

Dear Friends And Supporters Of Dhc New Life Centre,

We have wonderful news of the childrens' recent East-Pole school exam results.

All of the DHC New Life students were in the top 15 of their year group (there are about 100 in each year group),with seven in the top 5 places, and one first in class. This clearly demonstrates the dedication and hard work they put in to their studies, both at school and at home.

School Fees donation

Every classroom teacher expressed their delight at these constantly improving results and also the contribution each of the students make to the general life of the school, so all the DHC New Life family are very happy.

It is also an amazing result when you consider the very chequered history of schooling these children had before starting at East Pole just 2 years ago - many had missed large parts of their schooling or had been attending government schools where standards were very low - and now they are thriving on the opportunity for a good quality education which will really set them up well for their adult life.

The children are able to study at East-Pole school thanks to the generosity and caring of all our supporters who contribute to the education expenses of DHC New Life Centre. You are giving each of these children a very special gift and one that they deeply appreciate. Thank you!

Best Regards

Amrit and committee of DHC New Life Centre Nepal - 31 July 2011
